Return no man’s land to man
Explosive remnants of war (ERW) make land unusable to everyone, and they come in many shapes and forms. There are mines made from plastic, glass or wood. There are mines filled with kilos of metal and mines with no metal at all. Mines that will explode when trod upon. Tripwire mines. Bounding mines. Anti-tank mines. Anti-helicopter mines. There are mines buried deep underground, mines on roads, in trees and under water. Mines that have been placed by hand and mines that have been scattered from aeroplanes. Then, of course, there are numberless improvised explosive devices (IED) as well as highly sensitive cluster-bomb blinds and many kinds of conventional ammunition. All are potentially lethal, and some are designed to foil any attempt to disarm them. What’s more, their whereabouts are usually unknown.
